You Know Your Condo Neighbours Better Than You Realize

The Residence

If you live in a condominium or an apartment, you are surrounded by suites beside, above, or below your own. Although you have your own space between the suite walls, you share the building with your neighbours. You likely know more about these people than you realize.

The Habits

Recently I stepped out of the shower in my condo and heard the water running in the suite directly above me. Although I have never met the owner, he or she took a shower at almost the exact time as me on that particular day.

We each proceeded to accomplish different tasks that day and never crossed paths. I do however know that we shared a similar moment at a similar point in time on that late morning.

My neighbour across the hall keeps a small white shopping basket outside her front door. I have seen her wheel it to her door, take out the grocery bags, and leave the item there.

Perhaps she has a bad back that keeps her from being able to carry the heavy bags by hand. Perhaps she takes the bus rather than driving to save money, and carts the basket with her between bus stops. I introduced myself when she first moved in but we have barely spoken since.

The Deductions

While I can deduce many quirks and lifestyle choices about my neighbours from their actions, I may be wrong every time. I pick up small details as I listen and see different gestures on a daily basis.

I could engage in more conversation with my neighbours than I do currently and likely find answers to my questions. Maybe in the meantime I will continue to wonder about their habits as they do the same about me. Maybe our relationships are more fun that way.

Thank-you Lee. Very kind of you. Indeed, people's actions ofen speak louder than words.

Absolutely John, there is a room for each of them in that notebook! Thanks for stopping by to comment.

Much fodder for your writer's notebook. Think of all the interesting characters, their imagined lives and how they might enrich your writing.

Great post Christy. So true. You can learn allot about your neighbors from what you observe them do. Of course, they can also learn allot about you. It is however, a great topic for discussion between you. I voted UP all across.

Great, short post, Christy! Maybe some pictures (maybe not of you in the shower, but the shopping cart, bus stop, etc...)? Let's hear more about YOU and where you live, the beauty of BC and all that! Give 'er!
