How To Make Phrases Popular With Social Media

When a writer publishes an article online, the content has the ability to go viral. Within a few hours after the published button is pressed, there could be upwards of a few hundred views on a particular blog post. Or there could be five views.

Assume the post includes a new phrase that the writer wants to become popular amidst the on-line masses. The author can use social media to spread word widely about the phrase.

This morning I released to the electronic world (deep breath) my newest post What The... on my blog Poetic Parfait. The post includes the phrase "What the noodle." Comments from my followers zeroed in on the phrase although it is only part of one line in 400 word post.

Why did the phrase catch the readers' eyes? And how do I spread the word further about the phrase using social media?

The phrase is new. The phrase is original. Chances are readers don't expect to see the word "noodle" within my poetry blog. It stands out, it is inventive. These are key ingredients for a phrase to become popular. One cup of original and one tablespoon offbeat. Easy on the corniness, just a pinch or two of that attribute.

Using social media gets the phrase out to the masses. Or at least that is the hope. There is already an audience if you have followers to your blog. Facebook, Twitter, WordPress, and Google+ are your friends. While you shouldn't use your friends in real life, that is what these applications are at least in part set up to do for you. Spread word about your article or blog post.

Send the post that includes the key phrase out by Twitter with an intro such as "new phrase please re-tweet" and your followers will likely oblige. Offer to re-tweet some of their posts in return. Set up "sharing" buttons on your post so that readers can share it on Facebook and Google+ with a click of a button.

Belong to a group on LinkedIN? Offer your fellow group members the challenge to help you make the post go viral. Begin a new discussion post to engage members and make it funny to catch their attention.

The hope is your post will be re-tweeted and shared around the social networks. Your page views will increase exponentially.

Now, if tomorrow you ask someone a question and they respond with the line "What the noodle," show up prepared. Be ready to say, "Wow Christy really did know what she was talking about."

Maybe it will take some time for the phrase to catch on. Or maybe I will need to craft a new saying to appeal to the masses. Trial and error, my friend, trial and error.
