Fashion for Fall and Winter 2012

Style icons of fashion are rocking the menswear trend at red carpet events for Fall and Winter 2012. What makes this particular trend unique is that the celebrities are female, rather than male. Halle Berry and Winona Ryder, for example, both photograph this year in designer menswear-inspired suits.

The origins of the style trend can trace back to Diane Keaton's wardrobe in the 1977 comedy Annie Hall. Keaton, as the title character, donned men's vests, shirts, and ties. Forward to the year 2000, when Avril Lavigne bursts onto the music scene. Recall her popular boyish outfits of ties and suspenders, with a little female pizzazz too.

For Fall and Winter 2012, the menswear look for women returns with a bang. In the outfits, women exude femininity while donning traditionally masculine pieces. Key items for the trend are fitted blazers and ties.

Why Does The Menswear Appeal to Women?

Menswear has appealed to women since the 1970s, when the movie Annie Hall approved the look on the big screen for viewers. The look has an androgynous appeal. The outfits are not overtly sexy yet do have feminine qualities. As females take on more powerful roles in business that have traditionally been held by men, they are also adapting men's fashion styles.

Menswear is a fashion trend as well because the outfits have a smart-looking quality and are comfortable to wear. Ladies are able to look strong while at the same time being feminine. A great balance between strength and softness is achievable with the look.

Business and Casual Suits

The suit is a "must" for the Fall / Winter 2012 fashion trend. There are both business and casual suits for women.

Well-tailored suits are at the center of the trend for 2012 Fall and Winter. The blazer fits to the female waist to accentuate her curves rather than hearkening back to the 1980s boxy suit jackets that hide the shape of the body. The trendy look shows off the female curves. While men's items inspire the trend, the pieces tailor to the female figure.

A suit with simple, clean lines is best for women who embrace the trend. Darts on the blazers help women appear more petite at the hips.

Pair the blazer with a variety of types of pants. Pair blazer, for example, with pair of high-waist wide-legged pants. The flared pants style carries through from Spring / Summer 2012. Other options for bottoms are pencil skirts and pants that hug women's hips down to the ankles. These outfits are form-fitting yet professional for the office. Pair clothing with heels for a dressy and feminine outfit based on a man's clothing classic.

For shirts, try a feminine blouse to balance out the masculinity of the outfit. Choices for shirt fabric include lace and sheer fabric. Add a vest can if desired for a layered look that tops with a blazer.

For color, Fall and Winter 2012 is all about neutral shades such as caramels. Mid-tones that include purples and oranges are also popular for the two seasons. Cotton blends, rayon, and polyester are traditionally great-fitting fabrics for suits and are work-appropriate as well.

Relaxed Look

Female Casual Suits

Casual suits are another fashion alternative. The outfits are appropriate for lunches out with friends and running errands. Women can rock the menswear style even when away from the office!

To create a casual suit, keep the blazer or fitted jacket with blouse on top but switch up the type of pants for a more relaxed look. For example, wear a tan blazer and cream blouse with a pair of jeans. Choose the flared design that widens down the legs for the casual pants. This style of pant elongates the look of a female's legs. For shoes, pair the suit with high heels or boots. The heels on the shoes further lengthen the look of the legs.

Ties Complete the Fashion Trend

Fashion Accessories

Ties are another fun part of the fall menswear trend. The ties tend to be slimmer than men's ties in order to flatter the female body. There are a spectrum of colors and prints available for ties.

Other fashion accessories include hats and scarves. Hats are trends for 2012 for both men and women. The female hats are more of a fashion statement rather than providing a specific use. Fedora hats are also back in style; they come in several fabrics and colors to compliment a suit that gets its inspiration from men's fashion.

Silk scarves provide ladies a feminine accent to accompany the masculine blazers. Choose one accessory or try all of the mentioned types. Have fun with the trend!

The Fall / Winter 2012 Season

The 2012 fashion trend gives ladies the opportunity to experiment with men-inspired looks while adding feminine touches to their outfits. Wear fitted blazers or jackets with flared pants or try a pencil skirt instead. Add a pair of heels to finish off the sleek look.

Trousers and ties are no longer solely for men. Watch out men! Women are experimenting with different looks tand appear both smart and sophisticated in the Fall and Winter clothing!
