Why Financially Successful Writers Contribute To Multiple Websites
Success: Here You Come!
Financial Success
Financially successful freelance writers contribute their online work to multiple websites.
The published pieces may be articles, blog posts, poetry or other genres. The websites may be "content farms" or otherwise. Though there is much diversity, the link between financial success of online writers and their contributions to multiple websites is not a coincidence.
By spreading your work over more than one site as a writer, you are afforded several advantages that increase your income and help build your portfolio. Financial success is defined as generating an income that allows you to still live comfortably after paying your bills.
Lower the Risks
Lower Risks of Financial Difficulties
Writers who contribute to more than one website lower their risks of facing a financially difficult time.
You have likely heard the phrase, "Don't put all of your eggs into one basket". By spreading out your "eggs", or your published assignments, to a variety of platforms, you create a more secure financial platform.
Consider these worst-case scenarios:
- You contribute to only one content farm for several months. One day, you try to log in to the site, only to find that it no longer exists! Your earnings for the month (and possibly longer) and your work are gone.
- The website loses Google ranking when a new update occurs. Your daily page views decrease substantially, which causes your revenue share to plummet.
- The online publisher decreases your upfront payments for articles without notice and offers no explanation. You now make half the money that you earned last month.
While you may never encounter these problems with the one place to which you contribute, it is a real possibility. There are risks in putting all of your faith and your assignments into only one place. By spreading out your published pieces, you lower the risks if the worst-case scenarios outlined above do occur; you would not have to start from scratch. You would still have articles safely earning revenue share at other sites. Lower the risks to increase opportunities of being financially successful.

Show Versatility to Publishers
Writers who contribute to multiple venues are also more likely to be financially successful because they are more attractive to publishers. When you publish to a variety of sites, you need to be:
- Organized
- Self-motivated
- Conscientiousness
- Able to write in a variety of styles for different platforms
- Able to meet needs of multiple publishers
By simply having your articles displayed at multiple sources online, you show publishers who are looking to hire that you possess the above qualities. You demonstrate versatility and the ability to multi-task by juggling demands of different online sources. You have a diverse portfolio. You are more likely to attract a publisher's interest and that means an increased opportunity for financial success.
Social Media Connections
Build Online Connections
People who make a substantial income online generally have a strong social media network and a strong network within the websites' own communities. When you contribute to more than one platform, you are able to both strengthen and increase your network as you come across more people in the process.
When you join a second website, you may notice an overlap of some writers from the first site but there are also new people to whom you can connect.
Read the work of these new contributors and leave them feedback. Remember that taking interest in others builds connections for you. Within these relationships, you may develop agreements that you share each other's articles on social media networks and leave comments on newly published pieces. In turn, you increase your page views and reach a wider audience online. The result is increased earnings for you and more opportunity for financial success. Increase your connections further with each venue to which you contribute your work.
Poll Time!
How Many Websites Do You Contribute To?
See results without votingLinking Strategies and Success
Writers increase their income by writing for multiple sites as when when they use the platforms to build links for their articles. If you only contribute to one online publisher, you limit where you can post links to the articles. When you write for websites "A" and "B", you can create a backlink for an article at "A" within an assignment that you write for "B". You create more opportunities to showcase your published works.
Each time the backlink is clicked by a reader, you earn a page view on the second venue. If your pay is at least partially determined by number of page views of your pieces, then you are well on your way to financial success.
Your Journey as a Writer
By contributing to multiple websites, you are more likely to achieve financial success. Remember that the word "success" is not beyond your grasp. Writing is hard work and it does take time to build a portfolio of quality pieces. Be patient in your journey and stay positive!

Up, Useful, and Interesting. What are some of the websites for freelance writers besides HubPages that you recommend? I'm sorry if you already answered that in another reply or in another hub.
What you say about putting one's eggs in more than one basket is so, but on the other hand taking time to write for another site would put my productivity even more behind at HubPages, meaning even longer before I have enough hubs to have enough traffic to finally break the $50 barrier. From what I've read, that usually takes circa a hundred hubs, and I'm not nearly halfway there yet. I've yet to make $5 in a month, with zero bankable so far. Isn't my best strategy to focus on getting over a hundred good quality hubs published and then start also contributing to other sites? Or? Have you contributed to more than one site all along, or did you publish 50 to 100 or more hubs first?
Hi Christy. Not only do I value this hub, the comments and your responses have helped me immensely. Expanding my base makes sense. It would also allow me to expand some of the 'niches' in which I write. And, it also makes sense to start my own blog. I know - time, patience, and a plan! Thanks for this excellent hub with great advice. Thanks also to your smart and very gifted fans. I appreciate their comments too.
This is a great hub. Your advice makes a lot of sense. While I am currently signed up to write for another publisher, I actively only write for HubPages right now. The one concern I have is exactly one that you mentioned - what if I arrive to sign in and all of a sudden HP is no longer in business? I've never known a company that gave people enough warning about stuff like that. So, it is a concern that is always at the back of my mind. Thank you for sharing your excellent knowledge with us. I think it is wise to think about what you have said.
Thank you for this hub. I appreciate the usefulness of this hub. Helping us writers to benefit by earning money and continuing to write which is what we love to do.
Hi ChristyWrites,
I had to come here again and say lately i have joined oDesk and i have been selling few gigs at Fiverr. What you said is very true, when you join different sites you can sense an overlap among users almost immediately but as you get used to the sites you learn how to handle different types of online clients. The idea of contributing and earning from multiple sites is a bright one but it also requires a lot of hard work and dedication. Great write up, voted up, useful and shared with followers.
This is a great hub! Every reader and hubber should read this!
Yes there are others like Infobarrel, Squidoo, Wizzley, Seekyt, and even a site called Topicspotter. But Hub Pages is the original and best!
Guest blogging is another great way to earn income from writing and not much of a stretch from writing hubs! Just going to tweet this hub now! Cheers!
Do you have any Websites that I might be interested in writing for? I write mainly fiction, ghost stories, and stories about my childhood; but I am quite versatile. Thanks so much for the useful hub. I voted up, and shared.
If you do a search for my name, you will see my articles on over a hundred different websites. I did that to get lots of different links to my website.
Very useful article- thanks :)
Christy, I agree with all of your good points. I have written a hub on similar topic, and here I want to share some bad points.
You have to spend more time reading others work so that they will get back to you. People will never notice you until you read their works.
You have to work hard to market and promote your works. Getting traffic becomes harder when you are involved with more than one site
But anyways I liked your article. After reading this hub, I'm thinking to update my hub.
Cheers
Hi Christy... great advice Christy and one certainly to consider but where is the time these days... wait I have all the time in the world... retired now...
Hugs from Alberta
I don't currently write for any websites for pay but find the information very helpful in the event that I decide to start. Great article as always, Christy!
A very good hub Christy. I commend you for putting it out there that writing for one directory is detrimental to your earning power for the very reasons you give.
One thing a writer should do is to always have a backup in the event of a directory crashing. No.1 Rule ALWAYS keep a copy of the articles you write in a personal word file. This enables you to publish your article elsewhere in the event of a problem.
Writing for multiple websites also enables you to write on different genres for different directories, for example, I write mainly about making money online and SEO on hubpages, but blog about diet and fitness. This generates a good income from two popular topics.
Voted up and shared.
Thanks for the information. I currently write for a few different article websites plus a couple of my own blogs. Glad to see it is the correct thing to do.
Thanks Christy for sharing this very inspiring hub. I agree with Mary too writers need more time. Voted up !
I can see that I need to widen out and write on other sites! Thanks for all the solid reasons...I'll look into it. Voted up and shared!
The only problem I have is TIME! There are not enought hours in a day to do all this. Wish I could.
I voted this UP, etc.
You have outlined some great advice. I do have a couple of questions as to *websites*. Do you mean as an *affiliate* or actually writing an article? My second is the back links. Goggle is not friendly to my PC.
I find it difficult to navigate..and I don't really like the features. :(
There is so much out there to learn. I just now found blogger and Tumblr. :) Voted this up! Useful and interesting :) I shared on twitter..
Hi Christy.....nice to meet you. This is a great hub!...so full of valuable info and advice.
I started out here, not even knowing about the income possibilities. Pretty much didn't make it a priority or goal, once I became informed.
Then, after awhile, I thought, "Heck, long as I'm loving this entire experience, why NOT look at the "money aspect" seriously?
Well, the little Bit** on my shoulder said, "Because it probably ain't gonna happen, girl."
Sometimes, she gets to me...and I believe her. So now, my attitude is....I just write and read and share and comment and continue to LOVE this Hub experience. & the HUBBERS.......if I make a few bucks, it's a BONUS.
This is probably my most rational attitude......because if I intended to support myself here........I would be having mac & cheese every night with Bill & Bev........(after I've moved in with them)......Peace!
Nice hub. Very useful. Thanks for all the info. Keep it up.
:) Mandar
Christy, good write up. Having all eggs in one basket has always been a major fear for me. Fortunately, I'm not quite dependent on my writing income yet, but with the way PANDA affected google searches recently, who knows what other changes would impact peoples ability to find your articles on HubPages.
Definitely good advice.
Thanks!
Hi, great Hub, I can only repeat what all these seeming hundreds of commenters have already said! I'm relatively new at this, and still very slow over producing Hubs, so diversifying should be more in the future for me, but a definite possibility, thanks for the reminder to keep on track!. Voted up, useful and interesting!
Christy, you always have such good advice. Every time I think I know what I'm doing here you manage to show me something new. Right now I'm only writing for HubPages although I do dabble in Webanswers. Maybe I should consider another publishing site? I think you are correct in that putting all of my eggs in one basket is risky. Thanks again.
Great Hub! Trying to establish a base here, but looking at other sites such as squidoo as secondary options. I have a hard time focusing, so Im trying to just stay focused on HubPages until I feel I have a solid base, then I'll try squidoo. I haven't even built my social networks yet, think I Have like 10 followers on twitter lol. Just want to hit 50 hubs, then we'll see where I go.
Christy, what an insightful and intuitive hub this one is.
I used to write for Helium and Associated Content, but now I just write for HP. I might go back to them, but I'm not sure at this time. Helium and AC have potential, but I'm sticking with HP for now.
Voted up - useful
John
You've touched on so many great points! Diversity, backlinks, social networking... I love it. It's funny how mastering these basics is still the key to success. It doesn't have to be as complicated as we sometimes make it out to be.
Thanks for another well-written and informative hub, Christy. I'm happy to share it with my followers.
Aloha! =)
I'm looking to expand into other websites but unsure of how to, or where to, make the move. What are some other stable, solid writing sites to join? and at what point does writing for your own domain become a smart move? Thanks for the great hub
I think I heard someone say a few weeks ago how you shouldn't only contribute to Hubpages... and I immediately thought, I don't know how to differentiate between what I write for Hubpages and what I want to write for website B... (although I will admit I do belong to Xomba as well) But, I have a tendency to devote all my time to Hubpages because it has paid better. But maybe, just maybe, I need to start getting a little more active with Xomba again. Great article!
Great hub! I'm working on writing on more sites and doing exactly what you suggest. Thank you for the info!
This is really great helpful article, your approach of worst-case scenarios is very true. I will definitely reconsider my moves. Thanks. Voted up, useful and shared with followers.
Christy this was a very informative hub. Gave me a lot to think about. I am going to share. I also saw several of your other hubs that I am off to read. Thanks for all the tips. I voted up, useful and interesting.

Great article. You've given powerful reasons for contributing to multiple websites.
I like the graphics that you chose and it looked like many people have taken the poll.
Voted up, useful and interesting. Also shared.
Excellent advice on diversifying our online writing business. Two is better than one, that is if you have enough time to take care of them. Very useful, voted up and across.
Wonderful and useful tips. All writers should have an alternative back up in case one site goes down. I write for 2 other sites and do back link to my hubs. However my major writing is done at hubpages as the community interaction is instant and caring. This apart , I find time too short to write as often for the other sites.
Voted up, useful and interesting. Shared the hub.
Any suggestions for a good alternative to Hubpages so that I have variety. I have not found a good one that is commensurate to the quality of Hubpages.
And another great hub by Christy to be bookmarked and studied to death while wondering how I can make a million writing. :) Seriously, do you charge extra for awesomeness? :) VUMS.
I write for HubPages mostly now since I seem to do better here than the other places that I've tried. One thing that I do now is to write the article in a word document saved to my computer before publishing it in a hub since I had written at one time for Google's Knol which has now been ditched. Luckily, I hadn't posted very much with them. I would be pretty devastated if HubPages went away the way that they did. I do use other websites for my article links pretty regularly, primarily Facebook. I think the main thing is that you need to be able to work the sites you post on regularly, and they need to be high traffic sites so that your posts just won't sit out there in nowhere land, which is about as effective as shouting in the wind.
I completely agree that diversity should be a best practice for freelance writers -- beyond providing a padded wallet, a wide portfolio demonstrates adaptability and resourcefulness :). One of my favorite parts about recruiting writers for my company (Skyword) is that we have a range of topics and clients, so if one program ends there will always be others to apply to.
Great hub! Well written and informative. You certainly have me rethinking my plan to concentrate on writing for one site. Voted Up!
Hmm...this is nice and the voting pole really showed how many people do publish on different websites. Your advice is solid and I see that there's proof in the pudding.
Hi, like billy I tend to stick to hubs, I have joined others over the last few years, but get bored with them! lol! so I will never be rich! great article, nell
I have revenue-sharing writing all over the web, but it's hard to focus when your content is all over the place. I could spend 15 hours a day online linking this to that and slapping up more content but then my brain would fall out in about a week! Great advice, good hub, thanks!
I appreciate hearing this information and thank you for the advice. I see that most of (over 44%) do write within four sites. I need to keep on top of those suggestions. Voted up.
Voted up and useful!
It is a very useful and informative hub. I have only HP to talk about Though, I have joined a few more but never wrote one for any of them. It's because I never found one which is easy to handle like HP. I usually get confused but your hub is an eye opener. I have to spend time to set them right. Thanks for writing a very helpful hub.
Great Hub with tips. Voted up and shared with followers.
As an ex Banker and someone who is successful financially, I would say that one should not put all the eggs in one basket. Diversification can help to lower the risks and be more successful. Had I not ventured into Ghost Blogging, I don't think I would have been where I am.
What you said here Christy is so true! But so far I've had trouble having enough time to expand out of HubPages. I have written a couple articles on Squidoo and Wizzley but they didn't do much so keep my focus here. Voted up and shared! Kelley
Some great tips, thanks! At the moment I'm writing content for a company (see my username) but I've been writing under my own name on the Internet for quite some time. I will open a second account eventually, but I wish I'd chosen my real name for this account in the first place!
Thanks for this well-written hub! I've never really considered having multiple sites to write on, cause I mainly do it out of leisure. But it's a thought! (A little passive income won't hurt hehe)
Great hub! I totally agree with what you said. I worry too much about what might happen to stick with just one site, but I also appreciated your point about social networking through multiple sites. I haven't paid as much attention to that aspect, but I will be more conscious of it now.
Great topic for a hub, Christy! All of your points here are valid and well explained. It can be so easy to get into an easy routine of only writing for 1-2 sites that you really like, but in the long run it's always better to diversify a little more. Thanks for all of the helpful tips.
I started at Helium, set up at Wordpress and blogger, went to AC, now Hub Pages. Now that I have my own book, I started my own website to publicize it. Helium is the only place where I make any steady money, but I did invest a lot of my time there. This is an interesting hub and I agree that a person should try lots of things.
Interesting, indeed. I was for a short time writing for Demand Media Studios and Textbroker as well as here. Textbroker's rates were all over the place, determined by the final client, and most were too low to bother with for the amount of work required, and they had some dubious clients who wanted you to basically copy and re-word someone else's website. (No thank you!)
Demand Studios has a ridiculously long list of reference sites you are not allowed to use....plus a bunch of other equally long lists of must do's; may not do's and such that make the topics nearly impossible to complete.
So, I abandoned them both in favor of Hub Pages, where I am free to write what I want about what I know, instead of being forced into pre-determined titles. I've been so busy writing here that my 4 blogs have become neglected with no new entries in over a year! Maybe I should divvy up my time, and get back to my blogs!
Very well-written article--voted up, interesting, useful and shared.
This really hits home for me Christy! I am just getting ready to venture out into more writing sites and my son is helping me set up my blog almost as we speak. I am trying new places to write all Summer. Thanks, this gives me a boost of confidence!
Great hub, great information! I've been trying to spread my eggs out more these days. Thanks for the affirmation that this is a good thing. Everything you say makes sense. Well done. Voted up among others. Sharing, too!
Awesome job as usual Christy! I think too many writers fall into the trap of settling into a site and then when that site encounters problems they fall into a really bad feast/famine cycle. I learned very early on to not depend on anything online ;)
Excellent hub Christy. As you rightfully said, it is essential for a writer to diversify and not put all of his eggs in the same basket if he wants to be financially successful.
Voted up and share with all.
As always a very interesting and insightful hub. I agree that one should diversify, something I already do but should do more of. I’ve become a bit attached to Hub Pages and that’s not always a good thing. Voted up and shared. :)
I only write for HubPages and have dabbled in WebAnswers. Now HP has a Q&A similar to WebAnswers so it is tempting to keep all my eggs in one basket...and yet, I know you are right. It is a matter of time to also be considered. Now...if I didn't have to sleep, I could do even more. :) Voted up and useful.
LOL at Bill, here I come to comment for Christy, and you make me laugh out loud, heheeh too funny! Ok back to Christy, excellent job, yes I am with Bill, I only do hubpages, and a blog, but this has encouraged me to step out more!
Good job Christy, my new hub friend! Voted up and awesome!
Very good read and advice. I see I need to do more. Voted up, useful and interesting...
Thanks for reminding me that I shouldn't just put all of my efforts into Hubpages.
Great Hub. Voted up and useful. I write on my blog only occasionally since I joined HP 3.5 months ago. I should do more
Great information, Christy. Very helpful...... Thanks for sharing!
I write for 5 revenue share sites, 3 publisher-driven sites and 2 different blog hosting sites, and i still feel like that's not enough. I have gone through major downfalls in income from the RS sites, from over $8 a day to less than $0.25 a day too! Your hub mirrors my experiences writing online - great hub!
Yep, I'm one of probably a large number of people who solely write for Hubpages. I have tried to broaden my horizons, but I enjoy writing for this site so much, its so easy to do and I like all of the people on here, which is a very big bonus. Thanks Christy, for giving us a timely reminder.
I completely agree with everything you've written. I have also shared the concerns you mentioned with writing for one place. This has often made me wonder if I would be better off going it alone on my own site. Though, it can be difficult to build an audience that way.
Very informative Christy. I need to expand my writing to other site, but have trouble finding the time to conquer new site interfaces and creating additional content. Maybe it's time for me to diversify my efforts. Voted UP and shared!
Thank you! I've been afraid to backlink since I'm new here. That will help soooo much!
Christy I couldn't agree more with this article, these are the reasons I continue to write for multiple sites, though I still need to take your advice and link some of my articles from here and let's say Yahoo from time to time. It's just another one of those great insights that never occurred to me. Thank you voted up, useful and interesting.
Well there you go! I'll never be successful because I'm toiling for HubPages alone! Now I can tell Bev why we eat mac n cheese every single night. LOL
Great hub as always, Christy!

B. Leekley, the reason to write to different websites is many... For example, what if HP suddenly drops the rates of revenue? What if you wake up tomorrow and HP is no longer a site? Unfortunately as you do not own the site then you have to take those risks. By spreading content across multiple sites you see 1) which site works best for you and 2) which site is able to repay you socially and financially for your work. There is much to know and I'm glad you are reading hubs to learn more :)
