StumbleUpon as a Social Bookmarking Tool

StumbleUpon is a great social bookmarking tool that will help you get more followers to your blog. Founded in 2001, the website provides a quick way to upload your blog content and bring it before people who would not normally see your articles.

StumbleUpon is like a search engine in that it takes what you give a thumbs up or thumbs down, as well as subscribed Interests, to filter what you see on the screen. If, for example, you are one of 2.8 million Stumblers who follow the Interest "Celebrities", you are likely to see content about movie stars' lives and webpages describing TV shows. Log in to connect with the millions of users who regularly access the site.

The StumbleUpon Toolbar

Easy install using these step-by-step instructions:

Upload Your Blog Posts to StumbleUpon

To get blog followers using StumbleUpon, you need to upload your content to the site. Choose posts that you feel best reflect your site and that you are most proud to share due to quality, quirkiness, or other great attribute.

The easiest method for adding your posts is to use the StumbleUpon toolbar. See the side-box for easy installation to Google Chrome. To upload content with the toolbar:

  • Open your blog post
  • Click the StumbleUpon icon in the top right-hand corner of Chrome to access the toolbar
  • Click the thumbs up "I like it!" button
  • The "Add a New Page" screen opens if the page is not already added to the site.
  • Fill out fields according to specifications of next section to maximize opportunity for blog followers.

Without the toolbar, upload new content by:

  • Open new tab in browser and open your StumbleUpon account
  • Click "Profile" > "Add New Page" (bottom left-hand side of screen)

StumbleUpon Submission Page

Maximize your opportunity to get blog followers by completely filling out fields within the "Add a New Page" section of StumbleUpon. On the submission page, identify the "Interest" for the blog post, add Tags, and write a comment. Use all of the fields.

In the drop-down Interests field, select the topic that best describes your blog. For example, I have a poetry blog and submit my posts under the Interest "Poetry". Site users subscribe to particular Interests.

Get your content seen by users who are interested in related material. Remember that people are Stumbling to find content of interest to them; they are open to reading your posts if they relate to their subscriptions within the site. A read of a quality post can turn into a click of your blog's Follow button.

Add Tags for your post on the submission page as well. Tags are keywords for your content. Separate the words with commas and make them relevant. The Tags are ways to further describe the post and affect where your upload gets placed within the sight. Get access to more readers by adding tags. I suggest three or four tags at most, as you do not want to create an overly-promotional looking post. Your blog is valuable enough to follow without stooping to that level.

Write a comment as well. Try using the title of your post and the name of your site. The descriptor may provide the information the reader needs to search your site and become a new follower.

Follow Stumblers with Similar Interests

Get blog followers as well by connecting with other StumbleUpon users who have similar interests to that of your blog. If, for example, your blog focuses on tips for using Facebook, follow the Interests category "Facebook" and then click on the link. There are currently 2.4 million subscribers to that interest! Open up your blog to these users who are already interested in your focus.

Scroll through the followers list for the particular Interest and subscribe to people who appear to be active on the site, with several Followers, Likes, and Comments. All of these details can be seen on the user's personal profile, unless you are blocked by the user. Active people are more likely to read your own blog post and then peruse your site. Introduce new people to your blog using StumbleUpon and interest them to the point of pressing the Follow button.

StumbleUpon provides you a great introduction of your content to new eyes. In turn, you open your blog up to new followers.

Leave Comments on Related Content

Another great way get followers is to leave comments on content you Stumble that is related to your own site. If you Stumble a post that you feel is high quality, leave a comment as feedback for the person who uploaded the post. That person may just be interested enough to click on your own profile and Stumble the content you have uploaded. In turn, that person may become your next blog follower.

Help your comments stand out from the crowd by making them unique. Show that you have knowledge in the particular area, or add a quirky sentence. Show your cleverness to increase the probabilities of your profile being clicked in amusement or curiosity.

Get Blog Followers

The social bookmarking site is a great way to gain blog followers.

Fill out all fields within the submission page to maximize the opportunity of your blog post being Stumbled by users. Leave original comments on posts to generate interest in your own site. Connect with other users with interests similar to your own content. These are great ways that StumbleUpon will help you increase your number of blog followers.
