Number of Users

According to LinkedIn, there are over 161 million members of the network (as of March 31, 2012). Those users are spaced worldwide, in over 200 countries and territories.

The number of users has been steadily increasing since LinkedIn officially launched in May of 2003. Approximately two professionals sign up for LinkedIn every two seconds, as per the network’s Press Center page.

Most Users Are Located Outside Of the US

Popular opinion may be that the majority of the network’s users reside within the United States. The surprising fact is that sixty-one percent of users actually reside outside of the United States.

Check the statistics of where some of the members are located:

  • 44 million in the region of Europe, Middle East, and Africa (as of February 17, 2012)
  • 15 million in India (May 29, 2012)
  • 25 million in Asia and the Pacific (as of January 29, 2012)
  • 5 million members in Canada (January 19, 2012)

For a complete list of the numbers, read the About Us section of LinkedIn.

Revenue Figures

Revenue for the professional network has doubled since the previous year for the seventh straight quarter, as of March 31, 2012. That date marks the end of the first quarter.

Total revenue was up 101 percent for the first quarter from the previous year! The first quarter revenue rose to $188.5 million, while 2011’s first quarter was $93.9 million.

Jeff Weiner, CEO of the network, said, “We saw strength across all key metrics from member signups and engagement to significant revenue growth across our three product lines” (as per TechCrunch).

While you may have expected the rising revenue, the gain of 101 percent is a surprisingly high figure.

LinkedIn Has a Blog

Along with the network getting a makeover in July, LinkedIn’s blog also received a makeover. Many users are still surprised to hear there is a blog within the site. The blog is called LinkedIn Today.

Blog users now have two views to choose from online; they can choose between the feed design or select a magazine layout instead.

LinkedIn Today is located within the top menu of its parent professional network. Hover over the word News and a drop-down menu will appear. Select the blog from the listed options.

The sub-network is a great way to stay current on business trends and make new professional connections.

Free Webinars

Another surprising fact about LinkedIn is that it offers free webinars for its members. Currently, there are four sessions available and each one operates on a certain day of the week. For example, LinkedIn 101: The basics of LinkedIn is currently offered Wednesdays at 1pm CST.

Users must register in advance for the sessions. Find the list within the LinkedIn Learning Center, under the Training Resources tab at the left-hand side.

To register, click on the webinar of interest and fill out the Registration Information section on the page. Details required are first and last name, email address, city, state/province, and country/region.
